A major goal for the Nordic MDS group is to improve diagnostics and treatment for patients with myelodysplastic syndromes, and to faciliate research about disease biology. The group was founded in 1984 and developed within a few years to a Scandinavian organisation with members from Sweden, Norway and Denmark. Since 2001 NMDS encompass all Nordic countries.

The group has performed and reported a large series of clinical studies. Several projects have focused on the analysis of predictive factors for response to various therapies. The clinical treatment protocols has covered differentiation therapy, low-dose chemotherapy, pro-erythroid growth factor treatment, as well as on conventional treatment with induction chemotherapy. Younger patients with MDS have have been included in European protocols. NMDSG is the sponsor of two academic studies that started during 2004, one for low-risk MDS with focus on the effects of anemia, and another for high-risk MDS with focus on remission duration and long-term outcome. NMDSG also participates in two corporate trials, on Azacytidine for intermediate and high risk MDS, and on Lenalidomide for low risk MDS with deletion 5q.

Our website aims at serving study group members, Nordic hematologists and in the future also patients. The open pages include contact information for the secreteriat and all national and regional coordinators, as well as short descriptions of ongoing NMDSG studies. There are also patient informations about MDS and treatment of MDS in all Nordic languages. The Nordic Care Program for management of MDS was published in November 2004, and has recently been updated. Member pages contain study protocols and reports, and equivalent information.

Nordic MDS group meetings. Academic institutions and hospitals in the nordic countries are always welcome to send participants to the meetings, which are open for interested colleagues.
